  • 1 whole chicken
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil and add the whole chicken.
  2. Cook the chicken until fully cooked, about 30-40 minutes, then remove and set aside to cool.
  3. Add the chopped onion, sliced carrots, and celery to the broth and cook until tender.
  4. In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Add the milk to the flour mixture to form a dough.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of the dough into the boiling broth. Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes.
  7. Meanwhile, shred the chicken and add it back to the pot before serving.

  • For extra flavor, you can add herbs like thyme or parsley to the broth.
  • This recipe can be made a day ahead and reheated.
